WHEN TO USE?

1. Experience

I have been to Mexico.

I have never seen a white swallow.

2. Accomplishments

Man has walked on the Moon.

Scientists have split the atom.

3. Past actions, present results

I’ve lost my keys.

I’ve left my purse at home. I don’t have any money with me.

She’s been a vegetarian since 2000.

I haven’t slept for 48 hours. I’m really tired.

4. Multiple actions at different times

I’ve read this book three times.

He has performed onstage many times.

5. Time markers (already; yet; still; recently; lately; ever; never; for; since; all)

The rain hasn’t stopped yet.

I’m not hungry. I’ve already eaten.

He’s never swum in the ocean.

HOW TO FORM?

Positive

I / you / we / they +

have + V3 (past participle).

I have seen this film twice.

He / she / it +

has + V3 (past participle).

He has lost his key and now he can't open the door.

Negative

I / you / we / they +

have not + V3

They haven't eaten seafood before.

He / she / it +

has not + V3

He hasn't come back from school yet.

Question

SPELLING RULE

Regular verbs

*If the verb ends in a silent e, simply add -d.

live --> lived; love --> loved; bake --> baked

*For most verbs, simply add -ed.

talk --> talked; clean --> cleaned; watch --> watched; play --> played

*For verb ending in a consonant + y, change the "y" to "i" and add -ed.

cry --> cried; carry --> carried; study --> studied

Irregular verbs

EXAMPLE

It’s only 10 a.m., but I’ve already done so many things! I’ve made breakfast, cleaned the kitchen, and walked the dog twice. My neighbor has called me three times — I think she has lost her cat again. And guess what? I’ve spilled coffee on my new white shirt. What a perfect start of the day!
