WHEN TO USE?

Actions completed in the past

I ate the whole pizza yesterday.

Actions occured at a specific time in the past

He played football on Sunday, and he slept all Monday.

Actions in a sequence of events in the past

I woke up, spilled my tea, and laughed at myself.

HOW TO USE?

Positive

Subject + past form (V2) of the verb

My mum went to Istanbul last night.

Negative

Subject + didn't + base form (V1) of the verb

He didn't tell me your secret.

Positive

You / We / They were

They were very happy children.

Negative

We weren’t interested in grammar, only in talking.

SPELLING RULES

Regular verbs

*If the verb ends in a silent e, simply add -d.

live --> lived; love --> loved; bake --> baked

*For most verbs, simply add -ed.

talk --> talked; clean --> cleaned; watch --> watched; play --> played

*For verb ending in a consonant + y, change the "y" to "i" and add -ed.

cry --> cried; carry --> carried; study --> studied

Irregular verbs

Here is a list of some irregular verbs:

PRONUNCIATION

-ed --> /t/ for verbs, ending in a voiceless consonant (e.g. k, t, s, etc.)

  • discussed /dɪˈskʌst/

  • crossed /krɒst/

  • asked /ɑːskt/

-ed --> /d/ for verbs, ending in a voiced consonant (e.g. v, r, z, etc.)

  • believed /bɪˈliːvd/

  • appeared /əˈpɪəd/

  • excused /ɪkˈskjuːzd/

-ed --> /id/ for verbs, ending in a -d or -t.

  • added /ˈædɪd/

  • wanted /ˈwɒntɪd/

  • lasted /ˈlɑːstɪd/

EXAMPLES

She always sang in the shower when she was a teenager.

We played chess after class on Tuesdays.

He didn’t play chess after class on Tuesdays — he played thumb wars instead!

Did he played chess after class on Tuesdays?

She doesn't sang in the shower when she were a teenager.
